501 Double out

Rules of the Game

501 double out is the standard version of the game in competition and the object is to “check out” by getting your score down to 50 or less before ending the game by reaching zero by either throwing a double or a bullseye with your final dart.

To win a player must reach zero by hitting a double or a bull, having first got their score down from the 501 starting point. If they do that they win the leg and the first to three legs wins the set.

Most matches are normally played “best of” a defined (odd) number of sets, with the sport’s biggest prize, the PDC World Championship, involving a final that is best of 13 (therefore the winner is the first to seven sets).

Killer

Rules of the Game

The numbers used are determined by the players. Each player throws one dart with the "opposite" hand. (e.g., right-handers throw left-handed) to determine randomly his or her own number. If a player misses the dartboard or hits a number already taken, he or she throws again.

Each player first tries to hit the double of his or her own number. When this is acheived, the player is known as a "killer" and a K is placed after his name on the scoreboard. After becoming a killer, a player begins aiming for the doubles of opponents' numbers. Each player has three lives and whenever a killer hits an opponents' double the opponent loses one of his lives. If a killer hits his or her own double by mistake, the killer loses one live; it is therefore possible to kill yourself by accident.

It is also possible to kill an opponent in one exceptional three dart turn by throwing three doubles. The game progresses until only one person has any lives left.

This is the most popular game for large groups and is good swift fun. There are variations but this is the basic game.

To begin, an order of play is decided, and each player throws one dart 'bad-handed' (left-handed players throw right-handed and vice-versa) at the board to decide their number. Obviously, if a dart misses or hits a number that is already allocated, the player retries. Each player is allocated a set number of lives (usually 5) and is generally required to put a small stake into a pot. It is a good tactic to avoid being adjacent to somebody elses number.

Players start by taking turns to aim at their allocated number, scoring a life for each dart that hits it, 2 lives for a double and 3 lives for a treble. Once a player has scored 5 lives, that player is a 'killer' until somebody else deducts one or more lives from his score. However, a player must get EXACTLY 5 lives to become a killer, if he overshoots, then his score is deducted by the amount exceeded. For instance, if a player is on 4 lives and hits a treble of his number, the first of the 3 lives scored takes the player to 5 but the remaining 2 lives are deducted - so the end result is a score of 3 lives. Once a player is a killer, they aim at any of the other player's numbers. Each time they do, the appropriate number of lives is deducted from the victimised player's score. When a player is reduced to below 0, that player is out of the game. For instance if a player has 1 life and a killer hits that player's number's double, that player's score is reduced to -1 and he is out of the game.

The final player left in the game is the winner and collects the pot.

Any number can play, but Killer is most fun with three or more players.

Shanghai

Rules of the Game

Shanghai darts or Darts Shanghai is considered a game of accuracy. It’s relatively easy to learn and has simple rules. It’s fun as it covers the whole board. It can be played by any number of people or teams.

The main objective of the Shanghai darts is to score as many points as possible in the 20 innings or to “Shanghai” your opponent.

Players take turns throwing at the numbers 1, 2, and so on, in sequence, until 7.

They try to score as many points as possible per turn (using all three darts). Only darts hitting the number in play count for score. So, when the number 1 is in play, the highest score that can be achieved is three - if the player hits a 1 with each dart. However, when the number 7 is the number in play, the highest score could be a 21 - if the player hits 7 all three times.

Obviously, as the game progresses, the score gets higher. There are two ways to win: either have the highest score at the end of the game or score a shanghai and win automatically. A shanghai is hitting the single, double and triple of the number in play.
